what the heck is with G-Senjou No Maou voiceless and voiced version, not that i think that 26 euro is too much for that game, actually i think is a decent price considering how good it is, but why in the world make a voiceless version and ask twice the price for the voiced one is a mystery to me.

This title is on my vndb wishlist since a long time so I'm happy to see it getting a translation. Although I can't remember why I put on my wishlist.

The extra content is a substantial upgrade over what the currently released LB fan patch offered (three entire routes plus a lot of new common route content), and that also didn't cover any adult content. Agree, plus it kinda seems like they don't want to show us the full price, I was planning to buy this and have I not seen this I would've bought it without the voices.

Having to spend 20$ again would certainly have pissed me off and now I'm kinda like "meh ...".

It seems pretty clear to me? Both versions are clearly listed on the store page, telling you exactly what they are. They did this because it's a $40 game, but price matters a LOT on steam, more than quality. If you want your VN to be noticed, it has to be cheap. So they figured the best solution would be to have a low-priced alternative.

I don't know, the problem with me is that i always want to get the whole experience, if there is an 18+ version, than i wanna play that even though i usually skip right through it, but still, i wanna now that it is me who decides whether or not not read that shit. I don't say that what they did is necessarily bad, but totally reminds me of EA and his storm of DLC's. In my opinion, if you consider the art the script the BGM and a lot of smaller things that makes a VN asking for the same price just for the voices, seems illogical, maybe a 25% plus. Just to feel that even though you paid more you still made a good purchase, and you also had the opportunity to choose between to two. But if they had in mind this "strategy" they should have asked 30 for the voiceless and 40 with the voices and not 20 and 40. This is totally my opinion of course.

Yes and no, without the voices the game is probably incredibly dull and boring so yeah, maybe they'll get the game cheaper but it'll also be a disappointment to them.

 

While what you says about the price on Steam is true I still believe that this is not a very honest solution, when I saw G-Senjou no Maou on steam I almost bought it right away without looking too much because I really love the game and now I still feel a little bit tricked. (Not saying I won't buy it, but still ...)

First of all I want to point out Doki didn't translate shit. They were gifted the translations by another group who didn't have the time to finish the EX/ME versions.

 

They then sat and sat on it not doing shit in the way of translations. I have no idea if they decided to compensate the original translators for their work but considering the way they've treated the rest of us sitting on their work for years not doing anything before finally shafting us doing an all ages 'perfect' release that was essentially already translated I wouldn't be surprised if they got taken as well.

 

This is another reason why DOKI stuff is shit and why no one bothers with their releases anymore.

As far as I'm aware, the people who did the translation before (fluffy I believe) essentially joined doki translations. So in reality the people who actually translated the original LB game (and now the PE) are getting paid for their hard work... I don't see the problem.

A large amount of the original LB translation team were Fruitbat Factory's founders, and the transfer over to Doki was a planned deal both sides wanted. Since Fruitbat Factory are the ones licensing this, you can probably say that the original team is going to get the biggest piece of the pie in all of this, after Key's take of course.

I happy they are getting their fair share of the pie.

 

But I still think the way things went down is bullshit. We were told that they were giving the translation to Doki so they could finish the 30K or so lines left. How many years has it been now and they still hasn't finished? They then decide to release the perfect version which has basically been on the internet for close to a decade without the artbook and the useless shit that appeal only key fanboi's.

 

They think taking the patch accomplishes something when the people who wanted the all ages version have already played it a long time ago.

You act as if this version has nothing to offer over the previously released patch when it has three entire new routes plus a lot of common route stuff added. You know what? I'm not a key fanboy, I dislike some of their games and don't get into a fervor over hype like many do, but even I really want that new content even though I've already played through the old patch. Enough to buy it. So there you go.

 

Anyways, Doki never had an obligation to you to finish and release the patch. A lot of people are acting like it is their right to download and play a free fan patch of EX which is a pretty absurd attitude to have. Amateurs doing this on their free time can take as long as they want and drop or stall projects for any reason, and you just have to accept it. You are not entitled to anything from them. And if they decide that they don't want to release a patch but instead switch over to an official retail release, that's their prerogative. It's their hard work that's being put into this, they can do what they want with it.

Fruitbat Factory are the ones who initiated and underwent negotiations. Placing all of the blame on Doki feels really misguided. I also very heavily doubt that Doki adopted the project from Fluffy with the intent to stall it until they could sell it. I mean, it's not even them who are selling it. They did say that they were in negotiations with Key for the last year, but in that stage you really can't talk about anything. There are NDAs involved and in general you're not supposed to talk about ongoing business negotiations.

 

I know I'm sounding like a hardcore white knight with so many posts in defense of this but there seems to be a whole lot of misconceptions flying about right now about pretty much everything to do with this.

G Senjou looks interesting and it was totally off my radar for the longest time so I think il pick it up on steam WITH the voices. I was at a panel last year and an interesting thing one of the voice actors said who worked at Funimation was that sometimes for video games and anime its actually cheaper to just produce a dub and exclude the Japanese voices rather than just keeping the Japanese voices and not even making a dub. A lot of Japanese VA's are pretty picky apparently about having their voice outside their country and its mostly just straight up expensive so its kinda natural for the voiced edition to be so expensive. Wonder if Clannad is gonna have a similar release where you can get it voiced or unvoiced for cheaper since both are licensed by Sekai

It is true that those who translate a VN have no obligation whatsoever to be nice and finish what they started. But even though this is true, let's say a VN that you like gets picked by a translator, in most cases if a VN is already translated by someone no one else will start to translate the same thing. But if that translator in the meanwhile gets bored or who knows what and the translation is canceled, in a few cases the VN is finished by somebody else but usually it will be forever and ever and ever be an unfinished crap. Also, it is possible that if that translator wouldn't have started translating that VN then somebody else might have already finished it.

 

a few ex. of VN that i either wanted to play or played and then banged why head to the wall knowing that it will never be translated, or at least not until the least of my wories will be what kind of VN to play:

I don't say that they did bad but sure as hell didn't to good either. My opinion, to every single translator, they do some really boring job, and a very good thing for us who don't speak and read japanese, full respect to them. But to those who are promising this and that and after a while get bored, and stop translating, well, to those i say, get your shit together and do something to earn some respect and if not get your stuff and get the heck out of the translation "business" cuz because of your halfasness a VN that might have had a chance to be translated might never be.

But anyone who passes on translating a title because someone else is working on it is likely going to translate something else. And those who give up on translation immediately upon seeing someone else claiming a VN first probably wouldn't have fully finished either. So ultimately we get the same number of translations regardless, they're just different translations. An example is the Noble Works team. I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I happen to know they wanted to translate Dracu-Riot but due to the uncertainty flowing around that project last year they decided to do Noble Works instead, and now we're very close to getting a finished Noble Works translation. Some people may even see this as an improvement! Is it a shame that Dracu Riot is still unfinished? Yeah, I guess. But I never really see that as a problem if we're still getting other translations instead.

 

As for the examples you provided, all of them had partial patches released, and I'm very grateful to the translators for at least giving us a part of those games in english. They definitely have done some good for the community. To say that a translator shouldn't promise more than what they're capable of doing is right in a perfect world, but this is a very imperfect world. Nobody can fully know whether or not something will happen that disrupts their progress, or if their determined state of mind will remain the same forever. I'm glad the translators started those projects you mentioned and attempted to translate them because if they didn't then we'd have nothing.

 

Besides, I don't really know what this has to do with Little Busters. That's finishing for sure now.
