So, when thinking about visual novels there are three factors that I tend to rate the basics of an eroge on. This isn't as much stuff like CGs and characters or music. Those are important of course, but I think everyone will agree that they should always be there(music is optional of course).

 

The three factors I'm talking about are story, H-content, and gameplay. I think the best outcome is a good balance between the three, but for this poll I'd like to think about the extremes. Maybe some of us aren't as interested in the story, if the H is really strong, or maybe we only need gameplay if the story part sucks and needs something to keep us interested.

 

We all should know what I mean when I talk about story. Be it a long drawn out mystery, or a simple slice of life drama. A good story can really carry a novel. But are there people out there who dislike too much story? Maybe some people enjoy a simple and relaxing eroge that the story is just there for fluff(like most porn movies).

 

How about gameplay? How much game do you want in your h-game? Are simple choices fine? How about mini games? Do you want a strong game mechanic to keep you interested, or does this fall to the wayside of things like story and/or erotic content?

 

Speaking of erotic content, how important is that to you? Do you only want to play clean VNs, or do you want sex happening with everything that moves every other scene?

 

I left out the grey area here on purpose, because I think that's where most people would tend to lean(and to add all options and getting 30 some choices would be a bit much). So what do YOU think?

lol guess i'll go for the first one but by tons of sex well as long as it falls under romantic scenes of sex that make characters reach a deeper bond between them not just sex to appease us.... my opinion.

story/character cast. I tend to prefer kinetic-novel style writing, so gameplay is 100% unimportant to me. As for H, I tend to play high-H games when I want that sort of thing, and I don't really expect any deep story in those, just long H-scenes.

I'm with the Gameplay and Story are most important, H-scenes are just a bonus Actually I prefer to only have a few H-scenes (my favorite amount would be 2 per girl) since I don't have enough... em... juice? energy? uh... whatever, for a ton of them and I hate skipping them unless I really not in the mood and I just wanna move on with the story. Actually that's the reason I have even finished a single route in Wanko to Kurasou yet and it's been on my comp for months.

Yeap, Story is the most important, gameplay can add a re-playability & enjoyment factor and H-scenes are just lots of fun. Too much of any of them can lead to a bad game, but that's mostly true for h-scenes.

Actually that's the reason I have even finished a single route in Wanko to Kurasou yet and it's been on my comp for months.

Yeah the second half of that game is all about h's.

It was a shame because the whole thing was at the beginning very interesting.

I also liked the main because he was a fuckin veteran.

I like eroges pretty much like Sengoku Rance great story, gameplay and high abundancy of sex

Story or GTFO, but I also don't want the H content to be boring, so that gets the thumbs up as well. Gameplay is usually a nice distraction, and I do appreciate it when the gameplay is fun, but I'm perfectly fine reading a VN with no traditional gameplay. I think it's rare to have an eroge that really hits all three well; first games like that to come to mind are Sengoku Rance and Monster Girl Quest.

The results on this poll are rather surprising. I would have thought that the story only option might be higher. That's where I ended up putting my vote. I quite enjoy games like Sengoku Rance, and Monster Quest, and I might even put Koihime Musou(even if the gameplay was a bit weak sometimes) in the full on, everything at max levels catagory. However, there's something about them that seems to get lost as you play it. I don't think it makes them bad games, but the ones that really hit me as stronger experiences are always the ones with the amazing stories.

For me, the story is the most important. I'm fine with sex scenes, but it's not the 1st priority for me. About the gameplay, I agree with Arco on that. It's a nice addition, but not required.

H-scenes every once in a while is good for my health. I'm fine with a minimum of 2-3 sex scenes for each heroines. And of course like every else, a great story and/or gameplay is a must!

the H scenes and the story must be very strong, and gameplay must be strong enough at least, well so far FSN is my ideal VN, and MGQ is super wonderful as well.. at least there's three requirement for an eroge to be super cool, story, character, H scenes, and gameplay.. that's all...

MGQ's story is just very simple, and there's nothing much with the gameplay or H scenes, but the characters are wonderful, that's why i love it.. even though there's sucky character roaming around but the one with strong character overwhelm that sucky feeling, makes it perfect, just like FSN, they are parfek

I'll take whatever I can get, but so long as it has a decent story I am ok with it. I don't mind a lack of gameplay, but having some does make it more enjoyable, and I do like sexual content in the games so long as it does not overpower everything or feel shoehorned in (and even then I can just sit back and enjoy it).

What i want will vary depending on the cirumstances. After spending quite a long time reading mostly story based VN's it tends to be too passive and boring for me and hence my preferences will shift.

Right now Kamidori is satisfying my expectations of story, H and gameplay but that will probably change as tedium creeps in and i will probably yearn for a gripping kinetic novel where i can let the story flow rather than actively move it along.

frankly speaking i could care less about the sex scenes. I play VNs and eroge for the story itself. if i just wanted those sex scenes its much better to just watch a hentai video anyway =_=

but, as much as i want to just enjoy the story, the art and gameplay is a major factor too. there are some eroge[edelweiss for example] which i think has good story but the art was horrible[imo] so i dropped it.

What I aim for in VN's are their story and gameplay. The H-scenes are only considered bonuses for me.
