  1. If there is one genre of music that is heavily underapreciated then it's Chiptune. This kind of music was first used in old consoles, due to restricted technical capabilities. Later in the 90s people realised, that this style has the potential to be awesome on it's own. Therefore I want to present you my Top 5 of original Chiptune songs. Hopefully this raises a bit more awareness for this great music.

I don't see the point in your explanation to be honest. By going with the "It's not like the author fucked it up by accidentally forgeting his guns and superpowers. He is supposed to be a spineless wuss." logic, all of the characters are written as intended. I compared his "suckness" to that School Days MC. Maybe you're implying that the School Days MC "happened by accident" and he was not supposed to turn out like that?

It doesn't make much difference in any case, the MC sucks no matter if it's intended or someone was holding the writer at gunpoint forcing him to write a character that like. Ah, one more thing. There's also this thing called opinion, but that's for another post. :>

Of course every character is intended (unless the author used a random generator to write).

On the actual topic: everybody is free to dislike characters and their defining tropes. You should just be aware that they are not "bad" in the sense of badly written, only in the sense of "I don't like them" if you happen to not enjoy their concepts and the author's intention. In this regard Heart de Roommate actually does a lot things right (especially the emotionless girl in the middle).

Actually, the worst MC is probably this one Sawada Yusuke.

You probably don't understand the concept behind a Hetare Protagonist. It's not like the author fucked it up by accidentally forgeting his guns and superpowers. He is supposed to be a spineless wuss.

This is a Japanese thing many western gamers don't get. We are so used to hypermasculine space marines with more muscles than steroid abusers that the mere thought of a weak protagonist is considered bad writing...

The intention behind wimpy protags is to make the reader feel stronger than him. As eroge are mainly bought by insecure social-akward otakus, the developers want to give them a sense of superiority by making the protag extra worthless. Ironically it has the same effect as western power fantasies (strong hero soldier kills 50k terrorists), just with the opposite means.

  4. Family Project is one of the better titles from Jast. The girls are pretty well written (especially Loli, emotionless girl and Tsundere), the common route has an actual topic (human relationships, family, working together to survive) and Wakamoto is one of the VA (fans squealing??).

The only real fault are the routes, or better to say epilogues. They are just too short.

  5. people just grown up. they found girlfriends, jobs, they don't have time. japan is not as popular as it was years ago. you have to admit it guys, you are dying species :D

At the same time MG and Jast buy licenses, VNs get official releases on PSP and Vita, Kickstarter OELVNs get up to 300k and VNs get more mainstream coverage (Monster Girl Quest 3 "almost" got GOTY on Kotaku, link).

Doesn't seem like death or dark age, more like a changing environment. Let's see what happens in the future...

  6. This is the problem if the fans care too much about their stuff. Even if it's free, we get angry at whatever problem it may have. Some complain about "bad translation", long delays, missing honorifics (my favourite), americanization, censorship, missing Mac support (lol) and many other things. I'm pretty sure the upcoming Jast version of Steins Gate removes honorifics and even if it's a small bullshit complaint I just can't help it, it still bothers me. That's just human and we all have to live with it.

  7. The Killer Queen patch will remove the H-scenes to avoid "legal problems" (Loli content). The question is: do we lose important information in those scenes? I hope Rusanon is still with us then and reactivates the wub wub...

Also, what's with the fan translators lately? Scared from legal consequences, even if their patch is illegal in the first place? Seriously, nobody gives a shit if the anime tits are too small and the voices sound like from a little kid. Does anybody really think their homes will be raided by some badass cop because of CP (and this status is not even sure)?

  8. Cross' dainty dictionary

    Visual Novel

    - any game with narration, focus on stories and characters and that features typical elements of presentation (sprites, CGs, backgrounds, textbox/text on screen)

    Dating Sim

    - a game that features statistic-based gameplay ("raise your stamina to get the athletic girl!"), will most likely feature VN elements

    Eroge / H-game

    - any game (visual novel or not) that features any kind of explicit erotic material, from rape simulators without text to long VNs with one soft H-scene

Sound Novel / Kinetic Novel / linear Visual Novel

    - a visual novel without choices, therefore completely linear

    Nukige

    - a visual novel that focuses on explicit erotic material

    Nakige

    - a type of visual novels that creates a melancholic vibe to make the reader feel more for the characters (example: KEY)

Bishoujo game / Galge / Gal Game

  9. Just finished the Yuka route from Crescendo.

I'm really angry at the author, I mean wtf?

[A cruel gang-rape scene in my highschool Moege? That's not only disgusting, it instantly made me stop caring for this bullshit. Afterwards we even get a "romantic" h-scene with the protagonist. After the rape comes the sexual healing and everything is alright, or what? As much as I love Japanese stuff, this is the line. You can't stuff in a standard h-scene and a happy epilogue after a rape-gangbanging and call it "Yuka Good Ending". Fuck this shit, even if Crescendo was actually pretty decent untill then...

Now I have to play something light and fluffy to regain my hope for humanity...

  10. And I was always under the impression that the good titles are the fantranslated ones.... (Yu-No, FSN, Tsukihime, Clannad, Kanon, Saya, Steins Gate, MLA... and so on). You know, the free-of-charge fantranslated ones, offered free.

Most fantranslators will retire after college, when they start working. That's normal and understandable. New students aiming for the Japanese degree (or watever people know Jap and want to translate VNs) will most likely come into the scene. The more popular VNs get the more people are in the game, same is true for commercial producers. Some projects get dropped, new ones appear... that's how it goes. I'm sure there will be no "end" to this cycle and I promise you there is still so much more cool stuff to come in the following years.

    I'm looking forward to it.
