  1. The meaning gets slightly thrown off, it's nothing big and you'll probably have fun reading it as it is.

     

    You don't mean where we changed some of the jokes to fit an English audience, do you? There were some references and lines that needed tweaking to make them funny or sensible in English. We purposefully changed some line to account for that. We would've liked to modify more, such as using 'exorcist' instead of 'Onmyouji', except that it made certain other scenes unworkable (the East/West comparisons fundamentally relied on having an Eastern/Western dynamic which was lost by changing the word). In general, we tried to avoid direct mention of Japan and Japanese mannerisms as much as possible to avoid immersion-breaking, and it meant reworking some of the lines on occasion.

  2. Was there a change of translator mid project? The English got noticeably worse as it went on. It now says Loose instead of Lose and that is, in my opinion, one of the most idiotic grammatical mistakes there is.

     

    It was the same person throughout. An unfortunate property of the brain is its ability to replace what it 'sees' with what it 'knows,' making finding those sorts of mistakes quite difficult once one has already read the text (as we surely have proven here). Do you happen to recall the line? We've noticed a few others as we've watched the feedback and wouldn't be against compiling a list to fix in a 1.01 patch.

  3. Yes, definitely superior to what I remember of the anime.

     

    Aha, maybe, maybe not. It definitely took dedication to get it done on that timeline; I haven't looked too much at other group's statistics, though I think I recall some of the other titles progressing at a good pace. It always seems like the official releases take a while, but it truly does take considerable time and effort to comb over a game like this and do a good job.

     

    The game actually has several familiar themes to a western audience; the hardest parts were definitely spells. We couldn't rely on the normal tricks (such as using Latin) due to some of the other parts of the story, and it would've been nice to have AliveZ as a precursor to help reinforce some of the naming choices we made in certain character's analysis, but the majority of the text was fairly straight-forward. Another point that took some consideration was text consolidation, Japanese can get very information-dense and constraining an English equivalent of an idea-heavy sentence into the available text-box could get challenging some times. We had to break a few of them across multiple text displays (especially when dealing with lengthy words or awkward line breaks), but overall we got it to work. There was also one character who was very... brief. Matching that constraint took some thought.

     

    Jokes and puns are always a difficult topic to handle (usually forcing the translator to create a similarly-themed substitute), and finding the 'official' versions of quotes from a third language (such as German) can be a little tricky at times.

     

    It's also quite annoying how easily the brain skips over typos when it knows the subject matter. We've given it a good scrubbing, but there always seems to be a few that work their way in. At least we can take solace in main-stream novels having the same sort of challenges.

  4. Translation was a year and a few months (we favored consistent progress over bursts and potential halts). The text editing took another almost two months, and then the images taking ~1 month after that. Overall, we started 20/7/2015. We wanted to keep it mum to ensure we completed with as few hassles as possible, and we've arrived at last!

     

    The anime took some surprising liberties, there are definitely differences between them, which I don't want to spoil~.

    To run, simply place patch2.xp3 in the game folder and start the game! This is a complete patch, covering the whole of the game. As always, make sure to have your local set to Japanese and use only English (ASCII) and Japanese characters in the path name to the folder.

     

    Be sure to install the 1.01 update form Lass before running.

     

    Also, if using windows 10, be sure to install Japanese fonts (it doesn't install them by default and we've seen line-break issues with the native English ones).

Speaking of Denwalts, looking at his previous projects I'm not sure that I could expect something good from him because both of his projects beforehand was quite mediocre to some people there (One was cancelled though). His portfolio right now was only Koi Iru Chuu Lips, which only scored average 6.2 back at VNDB. Although if we wishing hard enough maybe we could get something like Sakura no Uta perhaps (Impossible I knew). Well, let's just see it later.

     

    Yeah, I definitely understand your frustration, we were just as disheartened about AliveZ, but it was also encouraging to see AliceSoft actually reaching out to the West of their own accord. I sincerely hope their partnership with MangaGamer goes well, and we made sure to keep the script just in case anything new develops. While DSP#3 isn't Sakura no Uta, it is a title of more renown; it's quite a challenge to identify a profile picture that won't immediately spoil the game. We've been taking a more cautious approach so another cancellation/suspension doesn't happen, especially with the advent of companies buying up fan TLs just before release.

     

    I'm glad to say I haven't seen any indications of a parallel project, so all lights are still green for December.

     

    Koiiro itself was mostly a test-run and a promise, we wanted to try doing a release once to flush out any issues before hitting a more significant release like DSP#3. Hopefully we've worked out the kinks, and definitely appreciate feedback as our primary way to highlight any gaps.

     

     

    Well, I am not really expecting anything that major from him (definitively no way Sakura no Uta will ever happen, that's only in our fantasies xD) but I do expect a title that has something to read (49340 lines ain't a short title, that's for sure :D) ... I am expecting something of that size to come out ... And I like surprises, I know whatever it is that I am definitively going to read it anyways :D ...

     

    Glad to hear it! It certainly isn't a short title (it's ~15 words to a line), so it should be a good chunk of meat. The best hint I can probably give now is that it was one of the 'cursed' titles, a VN which has seen a few failed attempts. We started fresh of course, but it's probably a title you've heard of before.

    Thanks! That's reassuring to hear, especially considering the rather ....'imaginative' nature of the comments we saw in the older 4-chan archives. Seems following Aroduc's stye of keeping quiet until near release was quite a prudent move after all. Anyways, I'll be sure to pass the new on to Fuwa, we have accounts on the major VN sites we know of for the sake of searching out issues and bugs, but it is quite the task to follow all the conversations manually (something koiiro highlighted for us, very rarely will one hear of typos and similar matters directly).

     

    It's always better to have a surprise present than an over-anticipated let-down, so don't guess too hard~.

  8. EDIT : The guy who translated Koi iro Chu! Lips is also working on a new project its not on the list "50% nailed! (Specifically 50.316% Lines). " hes half way the only hint he has given is that its an Alicesoft title. "I suppose I can say that it's not part of the Rance series, making it a different side of AliceSoft than what people are use to seeing." So its not rance and he said its a genre shift from koi iro so any guesses?

    Well hey, someone actually remembered us, that's pretty neat. I know we're not listed on the tracker yet, but with 75% coming up (likely this week unless something strange happens) we're going to be talking about the release schedule, specifically that we'll announce it once translation is at 100% and we go into editing. Until then feel free to keep guessing~.

  9. If you like mid-200's moege, you'll definitely like Koiiro. The TL lists the girl's 'goodness' as: Karen, Mirai, Misaki, Shizuku, and Nagisa. Personally I'd give it a 6; it's not the shining example of all that is holy in eroge, but it's not terrible either (except for Nagisa's path, where PeasSoft really dropped the ball).

    This version includes several updates over the patch, such as skippable in OP/EP, reduced OP/EP volume (65%), and a complete TL for Misaki (Nagisa's bad end not included as in the original release).

    Quick update: a stray period found its way into one of Nagisa's MPC tags and broke her path, it's been corrected and the patch updated (with all links pointing to the new patch; so if you're interested in her route grab the new patch, otherwise it won't affect you.

    Well this is a surprise... suddenly boom 80% translated

     

    Well, you know, aside from being good etiquette, one has to show they're capable of doing work before they're taken seriously. Also makes it a lot easier to ask for help/feedback if we have something to back it with. I'll be posting weekly progress updates on the blog (planned as a static page updated every Friday/Saturday for VNTS-kun), but the next project will work much the same way.

     

    An interesting topic that we could use some feedback on:

    There's a complete bad-end left in Nagisa's path that PeasSoft commented out for their release. It's fully voiced, written, and everything. From the comments in file (and all the sample pictures on their site that don't show up anywhere in the game) it appears that they were planning a much larger VN but had to cut it back, and they felt they didn't have enough decision points to warrant actually including the bad end. Having seen what it's based on, I'd agree it'd feel very arbitrary, and you'd also have to go a ways back to correct it. That said, it's still complete.

     

    So, should we include it in the game, or leave it out like it was originally (It's not included in the current patch)?

  12. Guys I found out what the problem was with the original file. It had a unicode bug in the last line of the code. If you HAPPEN to have a unicode editor, change the last "%" to a "&", and it should make the file work. Granted, liek mentioned before, it is still missing some data, so it won't be perfect, but at least it will work. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PROPER UNICODE EDITOR.

     

    Interesting. It seems that people have started to host it at any rate, so hopefully we won't need to worry about all this file modification.

     

    I tried what you said and works...but what the last two .exes do?

     

    The large one verifies the signatures for the files (that they were indeed the file released with the game). The smaller one is an engine-tuning program that you really don't need to worry about. You won't need either to play the game.

    Grab the .zip torrent, extract it when it's 'complete' and overwrite vo.xp3 with this one. I'm not sure what happened, but this is the file straight from the game.

     

    Fun fact: PeasSoft didn't actually include all the voice files; there's a rather important line at the end of Mirai's path that's outright missing (and a few more that the TL had to blend into the surrounding lines).

  14. No, it's not protected and not in use. If compression failed it did so without notifying me.... the only thing coming to mind the the 3 files in the directory that have Japanese text in them, but short of starting a new torrent there's not much I can think of to test that.

     

    Can you open the file and see what's in there? (something like extracting with winzip and having it 'keep broken files)? Knowing what's holding out might help.

     

    The odd part is that it's showing as 100% for me:

    I do what I can.

     

    Technically it's been in work for slightly over a year, but the TL was adamant that proper etiquette is to announce something after you're almost done to prevent C&D mayhem (unless, of course, it's to prevent dual efforts).

     

    Misaki'll be a few months though, her path is ~20% of the game after all. But if you don't care about her, well, then you've got a finished game just waiting to be read....
