  1. Dragon Quest is published by Square Enix, Touhou is a doujin franchise. You can't really compare the two. Square Enix relies on a massive network of manufacturers and distributors to get their goods in stores, while ZUN remains fiercely independent and does almost everything himself. Obviously he's not going to be able to compete with them in that regard.

Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest composer) has 159 composer credits on VGMdb, ZUN has 3642. "dragon_quest" finds 185 pages of fan art on Danbooru, "touhou" finds 12366.

Either Touhou is more popular, or Dragon Quest fans are just not artistically inclined.

  2. Since this community is built around the distribution of illegal copies of software I'm going to just flat out say it: pirate the whole lot of them, then buy the ones you like if you are so inclined.

Imperishable Night is a good one to start with due to it's many starting lives, easy deathbombing and overall awesomeness.

    you need pretty good reflexes

Nah. I don't think that's true at all considering the things Cave makes. :p

  3. You have quite a lot of Touhou stuff :p

I only have 1 to 13, minus the fighting games, and of course tons of Touhou images and remixes.

Didn't got around to buying them, since they cost twice as much as the usual games,

and I don't like fighting games much.

But it is Touhou, so I'll end up getting it anyway xD

But I guess all the others are fanmade, aren't they?

10.5 and 12.3 are worth it just for the arranged soundtracks alone!

Yes, the other games in the list are all unofficial ones. I'm going to pepper this paragraph with YouTube links to share the love.

    and
are shooting games in the style of the official games. They're both full of awesome spell card ideas. CtC offers 4 routes that have completely different early stages (Scarlet Devil Mansion, Eientei, PoFV, PC98), and one of the most epic final bosses ever. It runs in Danmakufu, an engine that emulates Touhou for which anyone can write scripts.
    are
    really
    scripts
, as well as obviously a lot of horrible ones.
is another great full Danmakufu game one with many new gameplay mechanics and modes, that for some reason is not on my list.
is also a shooting game. It adds a third dimension (height) and a jumping mechanic. Suwako takes a walk through Gensokyo and encounters various natives. It gets really hectic.

Everything above is recommended. I won't cover the non-shooters on my list because this post is already too long. :o

  4. Melancholic, human, 24 years old. I live in the Netherlands, where otaku culture does not exist and those who deviate from the norm are ostracized mercilessly. I dropped out of high school after a family tragedy, so I have a bright future ahead of me bagging your groceries or something similarly glorious. I am a full blown STG addict (Touhou, Cave), but I lack the required fine motor control. I'm a Bioware fanboy, though I don't play The Old Republic because it's full of people. I was a teenage metalhead, but I grew out of it. I tried being a hipster for a while, but I got better. Now I listen mainly to doujin music, videogame/anime soundtracks, Björk, and various flavors of goth (post-punk, synthpop, industrial). I prefer 2D girls to real ones because I'm socially awkward. I like happy sex, bondage, lolis, yuri, monster girls, MILFs and just about everything else, but not traps or futa. My favorite food is NOT VEGETABLES, my favorite anime is probably Neon Genesis Evangelion (or Madoka, or Haruhi, or…), and my favorite visual novel is Tsukihime.

    Hello!

  5. I'm a complete Touhou-tard.

I can 1cc all the main (shooting) games on normal and a few on hard, I've beaten Ran, Suwako and Mokou and I've beaten PoFV's crazy sudden death extra mode with both characters.

I don't have the patience for StB and DS, though I made it to the final stretch in both. Fairy Wars is easy, until Marisa destroys me.

    I suck at fighting games.

Overall, I am a terrible player considering how long I've been playing. :(

  6. I'm a sucker for doujin shmups.

The one I most recently played is eXceed 3rd - Jade Penetrate: Black Package. It's really fun (and kind of easy). I was relieved it doesn't have the polarity system of the second one (it's like Ikaruga). That gameplay mechanic confuses me.

I also play the C81 version of Stella Vanity a lot. Stage 7's incredible difficulty boost keeps owning me.

  7. I'm looking forward to Mass Effect 3 the most. If it's as good as the other two I'll easily play five or so runs of it back to back, which leaves little room for other games.

At some point I'll also buy Heart of the Swarm for the campaign and so that I'll know what's up when someone breaks the new units out in a pro game. Esports!

  8. Relevant to my interests:

    • Fate/Zero Season 2
    • Shining Hearts
    • Queen's Blade: Rebellion

Fate/Zero because the first half was amazing and I have high expectations for the rest, Shining Hearts because I have a mountain of Tony Taka concept art from these games (simply because I collect his work) and would like to know more about the characters, Queen's Blade: Rebellion for it's amazing story (obviously!) and also because it's the anime equivalent of busty women wrestling naked in the mud. I hope poor Tomoe catches a break in this Queen's Blade season, after what happened in the OVA.

  9. Have you tried the demo already? It made me hopefull for the full game, and i'll probably pre-order it on origin next week.

    I'm a tali fanboy personally

I won't play the demo so that when the time comes I don't have to sit through a section I already played. It's like that one hit single on a music album you always skip because you heard it too often. I try to avoid that. It does put me at ease that so far I've heard nothing but good about the demo.

I have a Tali shirt. Liara's still where it's at! It's a shame Bioware cut Tali's (and Thane's) bisexuality from ME2. The audio files are all on the game disc, but they apparently decided against it. On that note, the ESRB rating for ME3 is 17+ because of "partial nudity" and "sexual content" so I assume the romance scenes are back to the level they were at in the original. This is a good thing!

You mentioned DA2 and how it was butchered... But i think ME in general is resistant to bad things that developers may do.

    It HAS to be good.

That's true. For some reason there's a huge difference in attitude between the Mass Effect team and the Dragon Age team. The former is much more involved with the community, produces better DLC (the story ones, anyway), and overall just seems to be better at making video games. They're still subject to the whims of EA's shareholders, though...

  10. I learned that it's to be expected for an average guy to pique the interest of a multitude of attractive girls at once, that absolutely everyone fits a certain character archetype, that coming inside will instantly force any girl to orgasm, that Japan is full of western-style mansions where a maid's duties extend far beyond cleaning and cooking, that television adaptions are always a poor depiction of what really happened (if they aren't outright lies), that everyone speaks Japanese regardless of nationality, that the average penis length is inches beyond mine, and that upon dying we will be allowed to return to our last choice.

This knowledge continues to serve me well.

Most importantly, though, after giving up on books ages ago I learned that I do still enjoy to read.
