Farther Than the Blue Sky

  • Language: English

There were just five of us when we first started developing rockets. We didn't have enough money, equipment, or knowledge. Everyone told us we would fail, but I...

We... didn't give up. None of us.

We lived on Amanoshima, an island far to the south of mainland Japan and the location of a large aerospace program. Our school, Amanoshima Academy, had a prestigious aerospace curriculum and students from all over the nation attended it, eyes set on being a part of the next generation of rocket scientists.

"Hey. Want to make rockets with us?"

That was why I was so surprised when asked me to join her. I was enrolled in the normal curriculum, not aerospace, and nobody ever doubted the fact that I was an idiot. But when I looked into her eyes, I saw how sincere she was... and it shook me.

Finally, I decided to join the small rocket club she was the president of: Byakko.

"You won't make rockets at Byakko."

The one who told me that was Reimei Kaho, vice-president of the largest and most illustrious rocket club of the many at our school: the ARC. She had come to notify us that we had been dissolved.

There was only one way to stave off our own abolition. We had to win a rocket competition before the beginning of the second term. There were five of us. Arisa. Me.

"We can make rockets at Byakko too."

Ibuki Nazuna, who loved rockets like nobody else.

"I want to be in your club."

Michibiki Honoka, my childhood friend who loved to play tricks on others.

And, finally, Kaho, who had made so much trouble for us initially. Together we tackled rocket science.

We had to win a competition if we wanted our club to endure. And, even more than that, we wanted to launch a rocket that our own hands had built and see it soar toward space.

The Karman line: 100km of altitude.

Higher than the clear sky.

We worked hard and chased our dreams to the edge of space.

Ano Harewataru Sora yori Takaku | vndb

Anti-Spoiler Warning: DO NOT read the entries in the VN's built in encyclopedia for "Child 1", "Child 2", etc. They are blatant spoilers. I included a more detailed (spoiler free) explanation of just where the spoiler is so you don't read it by accident.

So, dumb question alert, but are the rockets this VN is talking about the type hobbyist build and can be bought as a kit at just about any toy/model store, or are we talking put a man into orbit, don't open that hatch, there is no atmosphere rockets?

As far as I know, it's the latter.

There are easter eggs where the MC in 'If you love me, then say so' visits the school and talks with the MC in this VN.

As for the rocket matter, like Wong said I can say for sure that it's the real rocket as in the one that sent the late Neil Armstrong to the moon back at 1969. They also have smaller rocket here, but even then it's launched like a real rocket would do.

Is this any good? Like the premise is similar to If My Heart Have Wings or Robotics Notes, but the quality?

I've never played either of those, so I can't compare this one to those titles, but the tone is slightly farcical. Not nearly as bad as "If you love me, say so". I couldn't even read that one. At least here, the MC is legitimately at fault for most the of female outrage he brings down upon himself. I don't know if that counts as "quality".

It's called "stereotype". If you look hard enough there are tons of dumb protagonists across Japanese entertainment medium -- especially Otakudom. This includes but not limited to anime, manga, light novel and even visual novel. At least the translation quality is way better than "If you love me, say so," as there's no "calling a woman as a dude". The heroines in this one are interesting, and there's also some quizzes to solve, nothing too hard, just the easy ones.

How to avoid spoilers in this title: (Dumb designers of this title spoil it themselves if you aren't careful)

This VN has a built in encyclopedia that helps to explain some of the more technical terms that can be accessed by click on said words in the course of playing the VN, however some of the entries aren't technical terms, but terms unique to the game that have no bearing on real life. Include in latter category, are the names of some the rockets the characters build and launch. During Ibuki Nazuna's route (Ibuki Nazuna | vndb), the blond character on the right edge of the box art, some of the rockets are named "Child 1", "Child 2", etc and get entries in the VN's encyclopedia. DO NOT read these entries. They are blatant spoilers!
