Story

After the surface of the world broke down, the city of Novus Aether floats in the sky, thanks to the prayers of the Holy Maiden. Years ago, when the Holy Maiden's prayer was interrupted, an incident known as the "Gran Forte" occurred, causing a portion of the land to fall and split the lower city into two, separated by a cliff.

In time, the lowest layer became the dwelling of all kinds of low-lives, people who lost much of their former lives during the "Gran Forte", becoming known as the "Prison". However, a contagious disease which causes people to grow wings has spread throughout the city, and a unit has been formed to deal with these people swiftly.

In this "Prison" resides Caim Astraea, a freelance ex-assassin who does odd jobs for his friends for money, refusing jobs that require him to kill people. During one request, Caim finds a girl who contracts the wing-disease, enveloped in a light that reminds Caim of the “Gran Forte” years ago...(yes here we go another direct copy from VNDB)

Main Characters:

Caim Astraea

http://utw.me/images/reviews/eustia/xcaim.jpg,qeb7e54.pagespeed.ic.WmxQ6ajrrY.jpg

The main protagonist. He lost all of his friends and family in the "Gran Forte" and was taken in by the then head of the Golden Chain who had him trained as an assassin. He eventually earned his freedom and now works as a freelancer, which the main client is the current head of Golden Chain, Sieg.

Eustia Astraea

http://utw.me/images/reviews/eustia/xeustia.jpg,qeb7e54.pagespeed.ic.1XLb7Xmxbc.jpg

The title character, but most people called her "Tia" instead (which Eris called her "small animal"). She is cheerful and optimistic, and she believes that there is a greater purpose to her life from the periodic dreams she sees. She is driven by a huge desire to help and bring happiness to others, especially Caim, whom she looks up to as the one who changed her bitter life up to that point for the better. I know she is an adorable girl which men wanted to protect the most, but it's really hard to endure through her chapter(since her chapter is the final chapter)

She was saved by Caim before working as a prostitute. She was found to have wing disease and eventually was revealed she is a special type and have supernatural powers similar to an angel (for the ones who already played the translated trial version). Her last name was given by Caim to disguise as his little sister. Her ending reminds me of some certain anime, what was it again? Something Madoka, well not that it bothers me.

Eris Floralia

http://utw.me/images/reviews/eustia/xeris.jpg,qeb7e54.pagespeed.ic.5HMsAD5G-l.jpg

The recognized best doctor of "prison". She was saved by Caim from being a prostitute (for those who already played the translated trial ver.). She is very popular among the men in "Prison", although she has eyes only for Caim and is very curt and blunt to everyone else. She's jealous to any girls who even approaches Caim (Eustia being the main victim).

Her parents are both killed by Caim in the past, and for that sole reason Caim bought her before she was sold to the brothel. Caim wants nothing more than for Eris to treasure her freedom and live independently; Eris, however, wants nothing more than to belong to Caim and obey his every command, even it means dying for him.

Fione Silvaria

http://utw.me/images/reviews/eustia/fione.jpg?eb7e54

The captain of the “Wing Hunters”, Fione has a very strong sense of responsibility and justice. As such, she clings on very strongly to her beliefs, which makes her come off as stubborn and inflexible. In short, a kuudere.

Her brother used to be an excellent Wing Hunter until he became the "Black Wing", who kills any wing disease victims on sight. It is later revealed her brother was captured while he was investigating behind the truth of the Wing disease hospital and force him to transform into the "Black Wing" in an experiment.

Saint Irene

http://utw.me/images/reviews/eustia/irene.jpg?eb7e54

The current Saint, Irene the 29th is gifted with a way with words and incredible strength of faith. Her holiness was to said to keep the city of Novus floating. She can be a bit childish when things doesn't go her way.

It was revealed later that her real name was Colette Anatasia before she was adopted to the church. She is blind due to a certain dream from the angel that took away her vision but she can see whenever she is in the holy temple.

Licia de novus Yurii

http://utw.me/images/reviews/eustia/licia.jpg?eb7e54

The current princess of Novus Aether and successor to the throne. Licia is a young, mischievous girl with little interest in the politics of her country, leaving the decision-making to the House of Nobles and its head, Gilbert. She is, however, very interested in what the “Prison” and the lower city are like (though she is terribly misinformed in this matter) and loves to do servant work such as hanging laundry and cooking.

In her route it was revealed that the main culprit of the "Gran Forte" incident was indeed Gilbert.

Sub-Characters

Siegfried Grado

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_07_a.jpg

The current leader of the "Gold Chains", son of the creator and previous leader, and Caim's close friend. The two of them share a long past, having worked as assassins and escaped from countless dangers together. He's usually laid back around Caim, Melt and Eris but as the leader of the Gold Chains he's serious, efficient and ruthless.

Melt Logtie

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_08_a.jpg

A wildly successful prostitute in her day, the previous leader of the "Gold Chains" eventually bought her for himself. She now runs a bar and restaurant that Caim and Siegfried both regularly visit on Prostitute Street in the "Prison".

If you enter chapter 3(Saint Irene's route), she will die due to a second "Gran Forte".

Lucius dis Mireille

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_12_a.jpg

A young noble and overseer of the "Wing Hunters" who has quickly gained recognition and power among the governing nobles. He is concerned with the corruption of the government and diligently working to improve the life of all citizens of Novus Aether.

It was later revealed that he is the real biological brother of Caim.

Lavria

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_17_a.jpg

St. Irene the 29th's personal servant, Lavria is a timid girl who is torn between supporting St. Irene's beliefs and obeying the orders of the Church ministers to keep St. Irene in check.

She has wing disease and was cured later on by Eustia. As a support character, she has her own route which is similar to Saint Irene but only a different epilogue.

Sistina Uyl

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_13_a.jpg

Sistina is Lucius's adjutant. She seems to have feelings towards Lucius.

Lang Scrope

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_14_a.jpg

Lang is a vice-leader of Fione's corps.

He have loathe towards the wing disease and pretended as the "Black wing" to kill them. And....FIRST BLOOD.

Nudar Atraid

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_18_a.jpg

Nudar is the head priest / bishop of the church of Saint Irene. He is strict to Saint Irene due to her(slightly) childish attitude.

Gilbert dis Balstein

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_15_a.jpg

The top administrator in the empire. He is the main culprit of all the corruptions happening in the empire. A real asshole, nuff said.

Varrius Meisner

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/cha_16_a.jpg

Varrius is the captain of the Palace Guard. He is also the fiancée of the daughter of Gilbert. He dislikes the method of running the empire by Gilbert. And a true gentleman, nuff said x2.

Graphics

http://august-soft.com/eustia/img/ga_vi_g08.jpg

As expected from August's animating capabilities. The background effects suits the atmosphere of the scenario. I will have to give credit for this one.

Sound

Most of the BGM for Aiyoku no Eustia are focused on tragic, medieval times musics. Not much comment on them but it does give out the atmosphere. The opening theme is "Asphodelus"

System

http://utw.me/images/reviews/eustia/system.jpg?eb7e54

Compare to other VNs, the system for Aiyoku no Eustia deserves a credit. While change this appearance settings there will be a preview picture located at the right side of the menu. The CGs are grouped with individual heroines and some extra backgroud CGs. The omake for each heroine(with some additional supporting characters) are quite decent. The H-scenes compared to previous August's work are definitely better.

Overall

The story overall was decent. The characters development has its own pace and certain twist can catch you off guard. August's finest work I guess?

Recommended for:People who like medieval style setting, linear plot, fantasy, mystery

Not recommended for: August haters, modern style setting lovers, non-drama lovers.

Overall rating: 9/10

Thanks for reading and feel free to comment!

How's the story? I may give this one a spin if the plot/story/setting is quite involved. So far, from what I've seen, it just seems like your typical JRPG story etc etc.

I'm much more of a fan of science fiction / mechs / space ships / etc than swords, shields, and magic. Would this game be worth my time?

Yeah, I doubt it. You can check on erogamescape and other sites and it has received pretty high grades. Aiyoku no Eustia Review « Amaterasu Blog Ixrec's review on it as well. I've played (some) of the August games and they're pretty nice. Though this one is supposed to be their best.
