Kara no Shoujo is one of the best. If you enjoy horror I highly recommend Kara no Shoujo and it's slightly deformed cousin, Cartagra. There is also of course the seminal work Song of Saya. All three titles have palpable auras of dread and feature gratuitous amounts of gore. Eat your heart out.

Little Busters is made by Key so if you enjoyed Kanon and Clannad you may enjoy reading it. It doubles down on the "every day school life" aspect Clannad had going for itself. Katawa Shoujo is my primary recommendation. Give yourself some time to clear your mind of other games and then tackle it at a steady pace. Canvas 2 is also very similar to Clannad imo.

One would not ordinarily expect Visual Novels to contain more underneath the hood than meets the eye but technology and programs can break in the most unexpected of ways.
