Come on now, I LOVE me some Majikoi but don't act as if it's miles above something like Hoshizora in the story department, because it isn't.

Hmmm, for something a little bit different, you may want to try Katahane.

If you don't need porn with your plot, you may like True Remembrance or Symphonic Rain; but be aware that Symphonic Rain is probably a good deal darker than Hoshimemo.

If you don't mind "darker and edgier" you may also want to try Yume Miru Kusuri, which, in my opinion, is the best out of these suggestions, but then again, is pretty melodramatic at times, and may not be your cup of tea.

Of course, you're right. It's not miles. Majikoi is leagues above something like Hoshizora.

Why nobody mentioned G-Senjou no Maou? Or am I blind?

Because he wants something that is like Hoshizora, but may or may not be lolish. Other that Irotoridori and Dracu Riot, there isn't actually any other VNs like that that has a completed/active English translation project.

You can't compare Majikoi and Hoshizora. They are both completely different games.

Hardly. You may compare the quality of production, CGs, tachie, BGMs, writings, dialogues, and even subjective stuff like entertainment values if you know how to.

That aside, just because Hoshimemo has a much more "sensible story" doesn't necessarily mean it's better. Majikoi has strong sets of awesome characters, an extremely enjoyable character interactions, and their comedy is pure gold.

i can understand if you want to talk bout genres...

but..to the point you cant compare 2 different games >.>

its like saying..you cant compare your worthless life to others..since you and the other person were of a different entity~

That's a pretty shallow comparison. I'm talking about the depth and context of a game. You can't say either game is better than the other because they try to accomplish completely different things. Hoshizora is obviously another drama eroge while Majikoi is just one big fat JOKE. Everything about Makijoi is a joke, you can't take anything in that game seriously. It's meant to be a comedy eroge to which it accomplishes very well. Even the forced drama is in itself one big fat joke.

That's why I'm saying you can't compare the two. Neither is better than the other, they're just different.

Hehehehehe... It's easy to derail a thread XD.

I completely agree. I didn't even like Hoshizora very much. But things like CGs, BGMs, comedy, enjoyable characters, etc don't necessarily mean the story is good. The Majikoi series' story is shallow in most cases and borderline nonexistent in others (looking at you, Margit). That's ok though, because Majikoi isn't really about the story. I do think Majikoi is by far the better game, but my point is that the story isn't so great that you can harshly insult Hoshizora's in one sentence and then praise Majikoi's in the next.

Shallow? What is a VN without those components? Especially when it comes to writing, characters, and dialogues. A VN won't exist with just simply depth and context.

Yes, you definitely can't say Clannad is better than Milk Pot or YU-NO is better than Boob Wars because they tried to accomplish two different things. Neither is better than the other, they're just different, right?

Hehehehehe... It's easy to derail a thread XD.

This thread already fulfilled its purpose, so we can just borrow it for some short discussion. Hahaha.

Ah, I haven't played Majikoi S yet, only the original Majikoi. Though, I've heard that Majikoi S isn't as good as its prequel. And yea, I will admit that some of Majikoi plot isn't that great. *look at chris route* Although I will have to defend that Momoyo and Wanko routes actually have great story. It is very enjoyable for what it has to offer, and that is what matters to me.

Btw, almost half of Hoshimemo's routes is mostly crap and was put there because the developer thinks that Hoshimemo will sell well if it has many heroines. (Well, it's a moege so half a dozen routes is mandatory.)

Hardly. You may compare the quality of production, CGs, tachie, BGMs, writings, dialogues, and even subjective stuff like entertainment values if you know how to.

The elements you mentioned here used to compare VNs would only be valid for similar VNs. Something that is relative to eachother. I could see one comparing Hoshizora, ef - a tale of the two, and other similar drama VNs using this value based system but I simply can't see it when there are no similarities between the VNs. Similarly based VNs would be Sengoku Rance vs Utawarerumono (or Kamidori Alchemy Meister vs Koihime Musou etc), or MLA vs FS/N, and the list goes on. I would definitely start comparing the details of the aforementioned VNs to see which would be better than the other. But this holds no weight for vs Majikoi.

Unfortunately I've only played Majikoi and no other VNs of its kind so can't use a comparison there.

With that typed, I actually liked Chris route second only to Yukie. I found Chris route pretty damned funny compared to the rest and Yukie... What can I say about Yukie, a split-personality wannabe housewife swordswoman who can compare in fighting ability to Momoyo... Come on :p. Momoyo's route was also quite funny, and I didn't like Wanko route while finding Miyako route the worst. Wanko route just wasn't that funny (were they trying to make fun of wanko to kurasou?) and Miyako route, the serious drama in this one wasn't funny but just boring. It's unfortunate though since most of the interactions between the protagonist and Miyako is funny, but she becomes boring after becoming his GF -_-.

I might try Majikoi S just for Kokoro route because I found her to be quite funny too :D.

Since this is a VN rec list thread, anyone have any for VNs similiar to Majikoi?

Now it is you who is being shallow.

You're pretty hanging up with separating VNs through genres, and by your own argument MLA cannot be compared with F/SN because the latter doesn't have mecha. :p

But this holds no weight for vs Majikoi.

That is a restriction that you've set up on your own for yourself. And like I said before, "if you know how to", which clearly you don't. Which reminded me that all this started because you're trying to reinforce your beliefs that two different title can't be compared. Oh, and Hoshimemo isn't drama, it's moege.

>With that typed, I actually liked Chris route

>I found Chris route pretty damned funny

You liked the garbage route where Naoe Yamato went against his established character in the prologue and became a *beep spoiler*, plagued with horrible pacing, terrible ending and comedy. Plus, a heroine that has no chemistry with the MC. Yeah, make sense.

> a split-personality wannabe housewife swordswoman who can compare in fighting ability to Momoyo..

Compare? She is the weakest of the big four.

and I didn't like Wanko route while finding Miyako route the worst. Wanko route just wasn't that funny (were they trying to make fun of wanko to kurasou?) and Miyako route, the serious drama in this one wasn't funny but just boring.

Wanko has the best route in Majikoi. Good chemistry, good pacing, and stronger plot. Except, the baseball part, that was just dumb.

Yume Miru Kusuri is dark, even the BGMs are all about stuff that feels like a gloomy cold sky i think

Edit : and no one mention Flyable Hearts? Or My Girlfriend is The President?

FH has a shitty translation, so it's only for people really wanting to play that game specifically (like I was because I was in love with the art)

  • 1 year later...

My reccomend is Osadai (my GF is president), Ikkikoi, Edelweiss or even the SonoHana series if you feel like reading Yuri vn

Please note that none of the above titles are great or anything, they are more of a good VN that you can sink your teeths in.

Oh yech Come See Me Tonight and Tokimeki Check-in is okayish too if you feel like going a bit back in time
