Grandork 15
Hey guys! I would like to start a discussion about the company MangaGamer and their philosophy and business mission, but before we do I will talk a little about their backstory. MangaGamer is a company from the Netherlands that translates and publishes Eroge games for the Western Audience, releasing about a game every couple months. Their very first game was Hinatabokko, not a bad game by any means, but still just an above average one. Their next title was Boku no Mesu Hisho wa Doukyuusei, a game that can only be defined as mediocre. Has a third game, they did Edelweiss, quite a good game, but by no means great. After that game, they went on to translate a really bad game (Oishii Bou ga 2hon) and another mediocre game (Succubu☆Soon!), followed by 4 good games (D.C. ~Da Capo~; Suika; Kira☆Kira; Shuffle!), followed by a mediocre game (Ryoujoku Guerilla Gari). Finally, they translate and publish a really great game called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and a really good game called Soul Link, going on to publishing another 2 mediocre games (Shimai Don ~Shirudaku de~; Cosutte Alien -Yuuwaku no Cosplay H-). And this goes on and on, they seem to release some really good games only to follow up by mediocre and sometimes bad games. With that in mind, what do you think is motivating them to do this style? Do they have two teams, one that focuses on good games and another that only wants to release a game in time, as to not have a big hiatus between releases? Or is it that getting the license to translate and publish one of the good games is just really hard/expensive? Why don't they translate the really great games that are out there? Anyway, this topic is to discuss =)
desi 53
Why don't they translate the really great games that are out there? Anyway, this topic is to discuss =) Even though this has been beaten to death already, there are a few reasons why. 1. License costs. It costs more to license a lot of the good/great titles versus a nukige. 2. Profit. They make more of a profit on nukige. Sex sells and it doesn't take much time to translate a nukige. They can push it out pretty quickly and make a good return on it. Really, they can't just translate any great game out there. Talks with producers can end up being long and the fact that a lot of the more famous producers don't want their VN's to be localized at all hurts. There will always be more nukiges translated than story-driven VN's with MG, but it's just a fact of life now.. those nukiges help them survive as a company and help get those few story-driven VN's released. I thought so, but wouldn't the cost of License for games that are older than 8 years be on the low side? Also, about the profit of nukige games, is it really that great? I mean, games that just have sex for no reason aren't that different from just reading a Hentai Manga/Doujinshi or watching an Anime, so I, personally, see no point in getting it, other than wasting time, if I just wanted to fap, I would go to a porn site, since it's much quicker that way. Gerard the Lone Wolf 10
This is a really boring topic. Also, about the profit of nukige games, is it really that great? Boob Wars 2 beats KnS sales, IIRC. So go figures. Besides, Softhouse-Seal and other nukige companies pretty much throw their titles away to be localized, so MG has access to a whole library of nukige, as opposed to the difficulty of localizing story-oriented or moege VN. And there are other factors and incident, but I'm too lazy to explain. It starts from xenophobic, RapeLay, Minori, Fan-tl (Muv-Luv, Age, and Amaterasu), piracy, unreasonable price for licensing (Type-Moon, or was it Key?) and so on. Oh, and I have questions for you too. Do you think localizing story-oriented VNs for the western fanbase will generate good profit? Edited June 22, 2014 by Gerard the Lone Wolf
JCAll 13
I really ought to go back and read some of MangaGamer's older stuff, but I played "Sandwiched by my wife and her sister" on a lark once, and it was so godawfully written that I've been avoiding anything that came before ~2010. Gerard the Lone Wolf 10
I think MG translation was very shitty before Koryuu joined .
OneManArmy 82
Also, about the profit of nukige games, is it really that great? Trust me, there's a reason why there are way more nukige than story based visual novels out there.
Henta20 37
I dont think this topic are boring, i think this topic are intressing and about Mangagamer, i love Mangagamer more than JAST USA since the company are much faster so we can play translated Games faster and i dont see wrong with they translated and sell nukige Games so long the keep them alive, nukige are not that bad and some nukige are good
hyromaru 29
^ Because i rather have Hypno-training My Mother and Sister faster than Steins;Gate
JCAll 13
Hypno-training My Mother and Sister looks like a great nukige. It has all my favorite VNDB tags.
Gerard the Lone Wolf 10
i rather have Hypno-training My Mother and Sister faster than Steins;Gate How long did you wait for the official Steins;Gate?
hyromaru 29
How long did you wait for the official Steins;Gate? So worth it
Gerard the Lone Wolf 10
So worth it That doesn't actually answer the question. Anyway, MG story driven VNs are out much faster than Jast, but if people are okay with the long wait, I guess Jast can release Seinarukana 2 in 2050 or so. Meanwhile, I'll be reading Cartagra, D2b and KnS2 this year, or perhaps next year. Whatever. I dont think this topic are boring, i think this topic are intressing You don't really think so because your post is mostly off-topic, just like the rest of us.
