Incomplete VN Attempts?

Recommended Posts

I've been finding myself hitting a reading block(like writers, but for VN's) lately. Since march I've started Tears to Tiara, KiraKira, Muv-Luv, Kara no Shojo, Yume Miru Kusuri, and Sharin no Kuni. None of which I have finished.

I think I may yet go back to KiraKira and Muv-Luv, but the others... I finished like 90% of Tiara, but lost my save and haven't felt like dealing with the game aspect of it, the other three seem to just depress me, and while I completed one full route in Yume Miru Kusuri, it's really bogging me down and I don't feel the urge to return to it to finish it.

I have Canvas 2, A Profile, Ever 17, Cross Channel, and My Girlfriend is the President fully downloaded and ready to go, but I don't really feel the urge to play any of them.

The point of this thread is, am I the only one who hates having these unfinished projects sitting around? I'm struggling to want to complete them(or even start some of them). there's a little bit of me that dies inside after playing some of the great games I've experienced(Katawa, Fate/Stay, G-Senjou, even DearDrops and Kamidori) and lately all I bother with is a short nukagie that are little better than porn.

Thoughts?

I hate having incomplete VNs as well. Got a few of them myself - Harem Party (did the loli route only), Monster Girl Quest 1 (stopped midway) and the motherfucking Snow Sakura which I really hate. I know exactly how you feel, I would have to force myself badly to finish Snow Sakura any time soon.

Those 3 VNs I've mentioned are on my "on-hold" list for ages now, but since then I've made a rule for myself to never play 2 VNs at the same time, just focus on 1 and play it until 100 % completion. Without that the VNs would just pile up half completed on my list.

Also, to avoid "VN burnout" (which is partially to blame for incompletion in my case) I never play more then 2 big VNs in a row (unless something really epic comes out suddenly, *ahem* Baldr Sky) and just go read manga/novels or watch some anime, then start a new VN after a while.

Usually I only play the routes which I'm interested in. Why? Well I don't see the sense in playing a route of a heroine I can't stand, I won't enjoy it anyway. That's the reason why I don't care about unfinished projects.

I understand how you feel. I personally like to finish all routes for a game before I consider it completed, but I do have a couple of games that are left unfinished.

Games like Sengoku Rance which have a REAL game element towards, I'll most likely never pick up again once I've dropped it. For starters, I'm not a huge fan of those types of games because I usually get bored of the game play once I find it too repetitive. Second, romance tends to not be a big deal in those types of games.

For other eroge, there's a chance I'll pick them up and try to finish them. For example I dropped Koikishi and Kisaragi Gold star because I found the first to be extremely boring and the second one just had a BS story. HOWEVER, both have characters that I really like, and I find that I get tempted to play them once I start watching the opening a few times.

However, unfinished games are pretty low priority. I usually play games in this order:

1) Monthly releases that really stand out

2) Backlog

If I'm not in the mood to play ANYTHING that's on my listed backlog, then I'll consider playing an unfinished game. Still pretty unlikely though. Picking up an unfinished games means going into it with vague memories of when I first played it, and I'm too lazy to replay it from the beginning.

Oh no, you're not the only one of course. This can be especially problematic when you have too many games/VNs to choose from - you can become less interested in just sticking with one of them and finishing it. But hey, you should be able to overcome it, I think. If you really do want to finish those VNs, then force yourself.... yes, force yourself to read just one at a time. Don't allow yourself to read several at once. I try doing it this way myself. I simply will not allow myself to read Clannad just yet, even though I'd really like to see how good it is right now. There'a also Steins;gate, but nope, won't allow myself to read it - need to finish Forest first.

... But hey, I make it sound pretty simple, which it probably isn't for you. It is for me though. I'll only ever drop/stall a VN if it's way too boring/annoying, or, if I've done enough in it that makes it feel completed. Sometimes there's just no need to finish all the routes, if a VN presents several.

Aaaaaaaah... yes, that sucks... badly. You end up forgetting what the the story is about, in some of them atleast. I've got plenty of RPGs that I picked up but never finished. Well, forcing myself to play just one of them doesn't seem to work aswell as it does with VNs.

As stated in my sig, I only play 1 VN at a time and play it until 100%. I don't even start another VN before finishing the one I'm currently playing. I feel as if it would ruin the story of the VN I'm already playing if I started a new one. I might skew the story or something. That being said, I have had giant "on-hold" periods like you have. I spent about a year with Fate/Stay Night on hold for a bunch of reasons, I hated the story of Fate route, my desktop was dying so I had to switch to laptop, grade 12 of high school. I had a few months hiatus on Chaos;Head for school related reasons. And Mayuri's route in Flyable Heart was so god awful it took me a few months to trudge through that garbage. But as previously stated, I don't start another VN until 100% of the one I'm currently reading.

i can totally understand that feeling. The hardest part is starting the new vn, once you start reading you will generally enjoy it. What your feeling is basically a sense of loss and your mind tries to make you regain that something which you cannot get back, accept that fact and move on.

Having said that, i generally am unable to play any sort of ero porn or bad vn's after reading a particular good one, because i always end up comparing it and end up feeling greatly disappointed(and i end up ranting in forums, pointless). One of the reasons i joined this board is to never run out of good quality vn's to read

I only play the routes I want, therefore I have completed nearly every VN on my list. The only ones incomplete are Kamidori Alchemy Meister, Monster Girl Quest 2, Kana: Little Sister and Soukoku no Arterial ... started all of them, but only played a few hours or so.

And I only play max two VN at the same time. And this is only possible if I'm playing a japanese one and then an english one is released, then the english one has priority.
