SaruDa 11
From: How to read Visual Novels in Japanese in 2 years time (step by step guide) I think the writer of that blog is a little off. Why would you learn 2136 Kanji before even touching the grammar or vocabulary? The more different ways you approach the same things, the better you'll remember them. Spitting kanji into your head at the rate of 10 per day without any real knowledge of the words they represent is a prime way to forget half of them by the time you're done with all 2136. Immersion is the best method, and honestly you can start immersing yourself in VNs after less than 1000 kanji, most of the grammar points, and a whole lot of vocabulary. After that you get to play Visual novels and pick stuff up as you go along. That's where I am right now, and I'm making somewhat decent progress(probably not to the point that I'll be fluent in 100 days, but I'm not really trying to learn intensively...) Caelistas 12
Really wished i had the time to study japanese, but i already speak 3 languages and can't bring up the willpower to learn another one just to read visual novels.
Shadyren 10
Good lord. I found this translation quite useful for me to learn english. Thanks.
Yukari 10
Unfortunately ITH/AGTH don't work with all eroge. E. g. recently I wanted to play Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no and ITH only extracted the first half of the sentence...
SaruDa 11
Good lord. I found this translation quite useful for me to learn english. Thanks. I wouldn't recommend it. Machine translation from Japanese --> English tends to result in terrible, unnatural grammar.

aer0gam3r 10
I've played many eroge over the years using ATLAS; I don't even notice the bad translation these days. ATLAS translation aren't perfect, but it allows you to play a wide range of eroge, many which will never be translated. I wrote up a guide for using ATLAS. It also has examples of translations. It can be found here: An Aero-Gamer’s Guide to Using ATLAS | Amaenbou Dane~ In the end, learning Japanese is hands down the best method to play eroge. However, that will takes years. My recommendation is to play eroge using ATLAS, and learn Japanese at the same time.

mapepole 10
Thanks for the translate! But I don't really understand what they are saying :[. Sometimes it shows some japanese words. And worst of all, bad grammar pops up D:. But still better then nothing!
aer0gam3r 10
In my guide, in the 'other translators' section, I have included a bit about LEC power translator (with download links). Though this translator has a couple of flaws, I found that the translation ability surpassed ATLAS. My guide has lots of examples comparing the two translators, so you might be interested if ATLAS translations are too hard to understand.

I would say that for most general eroge, machine translators do a decent job. However a lot of other factors affect the experience, such as your Japanese ability (from watching anime) and the degree of error you're willing to forgive. Best way to see if it's for you is to try it out or to look at some examples of it. Just remember, there's a REASON why so little people use this method to play. An alternative is to play using only Mecab and Jparser, which helps overcome the Kanji barrier. This method is closer to reading eroge raw because it requires you to learn to read Hiragana and get an understanding of Japanese grammar. As you might suspect, this method takes quite a bit of work and your reading speed to start off with would probably be slow as hell. However you probably get a lot more out of playing eroge like this because your understanding is SOLELY based just how well you can interpret Japanese.
