The story begins with the protagonist, Kogasaka You, moving back to his hometown, which he left behind several years ago. Upon arriving, he stumbles into an abandoned, sealed observatory, whereupon he encounters a mysterious girl who looks exactly like his childhood friend did years ago. She introduces herself as Mare, a shinigami who reaps nightmares. Meanwhile, back at school, You ends up joining the astronomy club, which is desperate need of new members. At night, he continues to visit Mare at the observatory, all the while trying to remember a certain someone’s name… HoshizoraNoMemoria

Due to some family issues, our protagonist finds himself going to live with his aunt, Kasugai Haruka. However, on his way to his new home, he has a bizarre run-in with a magical statue, where he's saved by none other than Haruka and her friends, who show up as a magically transformed team. Once things settle down, he learns that they've formed a group of mages to combat the magical incidents cropping up in town. Our protagonist soon learns that he, too, possesses magical powers, and decides to help combat the magical menace as soon as he hears his crush, Haruka's daughter, is helping as well..

Among twenty-one possible endings, fifteen are good endings with only one girl, three are bad endings that involve one of the main characters getting killed, two are "harem" endings, and one is a variation (a post-fin episode to other endings). Although there are only three bad endings in this game, they are so shocking and violent that they became more commonly known (infamously) than the "good endings".
