Surprised no one's mentioned G-senjou no Maou yet. Sure it's not on the same level as MLA or Umineko, but it's got a great story and beautiful OSTs to match. I also feel the content and route structure is a good introduction to someone new to VNs. It was actually my first VN and something that really set me up for all the rest. Happy reading!
