Shikkoku no Sharnoth. Definitely worth reading, I liked Sekien no Inganock better. Both are very atmospheric, and have mindscrew plots.

My, my. This is certainly a lively thread, isn't it? Anyway, I forgot to introduce myself all this time, so here I am. I'm a Vietnamese American living in Thailand, in my final year of high school. Somehow, despite not understanding human interaction, I became class president. I was introduced to VNs through the Katawa Shoujo demo and Narcissu, and I found erogedownload when I was looking for Yume Miru. My favorite eroges are Sekien no Inganock and Saya no Uta, although I don't necessarily consider them the best. At this moment, I've finished 53 VNs. According to Ivan, that makes me about a tenth of the way done with all translated works. A worthy challenge. I like just about everything. Except overly stupid characters (Rimu from Deardrops comes to mind). I am, literally, never angry. yoroshiku ne, meena-sama

Make the CGs from the Shikkoku no Sharnoth minigames more easily available.

You could probably sort choices by theme so that newcomers can see which eroge are the best in any particular genre.

Oh, but we've forgotten the most important point. If eroge were popular in the west, sites like erogedownload and downloadani would be shut down, and then it's back to paying a month's wages for a single game.

If only more westerners could make non-shitty VNs and anime....well. I can't spend all day fantasizing. But I have to agree that the main reason that eroge will never spread to the West is that the Japanese give absolutely no shits about foreigners. They are content in being their own, self-sustaining culture, and have absolutely no reason (at least, in their mind) to expand beyond that.

Yes, the VN as a medium has a lot of potential for development, especially when you consider that what we have translated is really only scraping the top of the barrel. There's so much more that could be done with it if more people were aware of its existence. Really, the biggest obstacle is that most of what gets translated/is popular is eroge, but I think that, with more interest in all-ages games, a transition could slowly be made. The release of Narcissu in English a few years ago generated a wave of awareness of VNs and was part of the inspiration of the developers of Katawa Shoujo, which, although it honestly isn't the best VN in the world, managed to capture the interest of a large number of fans outside of Japan and did a fairly decent job of introducing eroge in more approachable manner.
