Just yesterday I was thinking "I bet someone is gonna start a Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai project soon!" because of the anime and all. Welp. Library Shepherd

Seems to be pretty fast, too. Hopefully that will amount to something. Could even be the first completed August translation if they keep it up.

They already said that the Grisaia KS will overlap with this. I dunno, this strikes me as a really bad idea to have their two biggest kickstarters run simultaneously. Like, an incredibly bad idea.

I don't think launching Grisaia like 50 days after Clannad is fully funded is going to matter much.

They will be launching the Grisaia KS in a week or two. The point is, there actually is a limited pool of money in this market. Clannad could drain most of that pool before Grisaia even shows up. But the pool replenishes over time, which is why you should space your projects out.

Granted, the Grisaia fanbase is also decently large and there's a concurrent running anime (although it may be a detriment at this point...), so I'm sure it will be successful as well, they will just make a lot less money on it than they otherwise would have. Koestl just said on 4chan that the Japanese companies are actually dictating the timing, which I find kind of odd, but if that's the case then there's nothing they can do.

Dovac said there will be another announcement tomorrow (not related to Grisaia), so perhaps they might be announcing another title. But yeah, Clannad pretty much is done with half the stretch goal. There won't be any problems with Grisaia.

It boggles the mind, first they act completely xenophopic to expansion, despite lving in a digital age where you dont even need to deal with the hassle of cross-border b.s. - and now that they are actually willing, they envoke strange business decisions. It's like they don't want our money lol...

Times are changing, most of VN companies thought that there is no market for their games here and/or were extremely against expanding outside of Japan. Hell, if I told someone that xenophobic Lilith and Minori would give out (some uncensored) licenses left and right a few years ago, they would tell me that I'm crazy. Having VNs on steam was a pipe dream too. Oddly enough, with the "rise" of non-nukige legit TLs from MG and Sekai, the fan TL scene went to shit, kind of.

I have a feeling that was coming regardless of the scene. I don't pretend to know much, but from what I can tell it's basically alot of "old blood" getting bored/burnt out, and not many stepping up to fill the void. (or hell, maybe they smartened up and joined Sakai, where they can get paid - sort of hard to believe big players like Takajun would vanish so completely despite the experience and skill he developed.)

There are more active fan translations nowadays than there has ever been, it seems. I believe the next twelve months are going to be much more active than the previous 12. It's just that average quality has gone to shit. Since a lot of the old guard are no longer in the fanTL scene, the biggest translation community is no longer tlwiki, who had at least moderate standards of quality and helped each other achieve them, nowadays it's Fuwanovel. As enthusiastic as they are, and as active as I am posting there, I'll admit the standards are pretty low. It seems like as long as it's not machine translation, it's good enough. And that "it's good enough" attitude also discourages criticism. They also really love moege there, so I hope you like it too because that's what most of the fanTLs will be for the next year.

Maybe this is because all of the most prominent old school translators have either found official work and don't associate with fanTL communities anymore, or have moved on with their lives completely after graduating from college. So places like Fuwanovel don't actually have any veteran leadership for their translation teams. I can't really think of a fuwanovel project that actually has a translator or editor who has worked on a released complete patch. That's kind of crazy considering how many active projects there are.

I wouldent know about fuwa, as i'm banned from the forums for unknown reasons :p (I suspect it's related to the global lock on the scratchpads, traffic funnels through a single ip when going there from what I understand, so when someone cuased trouble it locked said IP - for everyone not already a member heh - or somesuch, im no expert~

If it's as you say, then I don't mind Moege - it's something for them to start with, if they decide to persue it further afterwards. As for "good enough" meh, a reasonable amount of effort should always be made - but plain and simple "good enough" will never be - no matter how good or bad it is. It jsut depends how low/high that bar is to start with I guess.

I like to think if those that are new and want to focus on future projects will decide to up the ante when it comes to quality, as they get better. (or they might jsut slack off even more, being used to loose standards :p )

A lack of "old guard" doesn't really bother me though, everyone is new at some point - what concerns me is the demise of interest in the genre as a whole - but then again it is a cultural fad - it's just a case of when it loses its appeal. (I doubt anytime soon, but someday~ )

Yeah - can't really say i've ever liked episodic VNs. (with exception to those that contain their stories in each volume, like Grisaia)

But then again could be they are just playing it financially safe, see if it's worth porting over.

EDIT: In other news, discovered an update on Koiken Otome:

We are proud to announce that Yves’s route is fully translated, edited, and QC’d. With that being said, I’d like to remind everyone that we will not be releasing another partial patch. Yuzu also finished translating a few weeks ago and is in editing, leaving only common route left. As usual, we have no ETA for the final patch. Please check our status update page for more in-depth numbers.

If you have any comments, questions, or concerns, or even want to tell a certain editor to vacate himself in an extremely rude manner, come by our IRC channel: #pantsu-vn on Rizon.net.
