[Seiha] Little Witch Romanesque Kickstarter Project

Recommended Posts

if they really transfer money for him, other translators will follow his example. why should they do it for free when other guy gets 2k for his project.

haha :D

While that is possible, Aroduc isn't just some new random translator. He has a lot of stuff to show for it. I can't imagine people throwing money at some guy who hasn't done shit before. Then again, people are financing a lot of shitty projects on KS lately, so who knows.

I wouldn't mind Ixrec, koestl or even the guys from Lemnisca TL starting up some projects on KS if it meant more progress or more VN TLs. While you can say stuff like "Oh, but everyone did it for free before, why should they want money all of the sudden?" - I always say that people come and go. You can't expect Aroduc or Ixrec to translate VNs forever. Eventually real life stuff will "happen" and it'll slow down their progress or even make them stop altogether, a good example of this is TakaJun. I'm really wondering what would people say if TakaJun started a KS project, saying he'll finish/translate the projects from Yandere if he gets funded or just drop it all since he's too busy with 2 jobs.

There are a lot of pros and cons of this KS project business, but let's save that discussion for later.

As much as Aroduc likes to think he's being showy about this, it's not like he emphasized in big letters on his page that the translation is unlicensed and contains loli porn. Even if he manages to slip under Kickstarter's radar, that's not to say that any other project would. As soon as they catch it once, they'll be more vigilant for future Japanese cartoon porn games. All it would take is one spiteful person hitting the report button to potentially end this project and all future projects.

I think hes much less likely to get into trouble if these are 'donations' and not a 'i need this amount of money before i will do this' kind of project. One is hes doing this without the intent to be payed but some poeple are donating to 'help it along' another is he is demanding to be paid for work he is rendering. Which is reasonable, but not when the intended product is licensed by someone else...

Translators charging for patches is not actually a problem here on erogegames since we are all filthy pirates and will have the patch uploaded within 10-20 minutes of release.

Everyone bitching around the internets about how aroduc has BETRAYYYYYYYYYYYYYED THE CLOSE KNIT CIRCLE-JERKING OF VN FANS WHO WANT FREE TRANSLATIONS just needs to shut the fuck up. Most of them didnt do anything to contribute to any VN except jizzing all over their PC screen on h scenes (myself included even though i didnt go that far , my PC screens are unblemished) . I find this whole thing lulzy.

If they can make this work then maybe in the future....

Fanbased Translation - Varying Speed

Kickstart Translation - Faster release b/c translator spending more time

- People who donate -> Even faster release(Beta)

I think it's a pretty good idea overall.

The problem is if the translators decide to do what aroduc just pulled off.In a way he pretty much right out said that if this project didn't work out, he'd be quitting the translation scene after his current works were done.

Also, human greed is always a problem.I think 2.5k is a reasonable enough goal but soon enough we'll see people wanting 20 - 30k and even more to translate a game, I'm afraid of aroduc gradually raising his prices, slowly but surely, to see how far he can push it.

As expected (hell, KS took down Tentacle Bento, so if this went over it would've been ridiculous). I can't even imagine what went through their heads with the "lol Littlewitch is no more" approach.

There's just no way Kickstarter translation projects can be successful unless the "OK" is given by the developers. The way they did this, it was a pretty obvious (public) slap in the face to Littlewitch.

If people want to donate to X translator privately through paypal, a steam gift game or something that's one thing. But using a platform like KS to do it is doomed to fail.

It's pretty sad.

they must have known this was going to happen so why do it in the first place? couldnt they have gathered the necessary funds without using kickstarter? (if this is a stupid question i apologize in advance)

In theory, yes, he could have just used donations. But using kickstarter makes it easy to see how much money has been raised without the potential for cooking the books (it's unlikely that Aroduc would do that, but using kickstarter probably makes people feel more at ease). It's also easier to raise the money and to garner attention through kickstarter as opposed to a little donation button on his blog.

Even though the kickstarter was stopped, it will be a lot easier to re-raise the money afterwards just using donations as just about everyone and their cat who keeps up with visual novels knows about this event. Ergo, he may have just used the kickstarter as a sort of ad campaign (I suppose he didn't have much to loose -- having everyone know about the project might have other benefits, too).

Potentially, aroduc just did it to make a point; it's possible he did this to see whether or not he'd get a reaction from the dev or kickstarter. As to why, I'm not so sure. Did he want to prove that future kickstarter campaigns for visual novel fan translations won't work? An attempt to spite the dev? Did he want to attract a lot of attention to himself for some hidden purpose (go out with a bang, or to stir up the VN community to see if that could get the developer's permission?...)? Just wild speculation at this point, I'm afraid -- it's possible he really did think that it would slip under the kickstarter radar no problem and he didn't have world domination plans and/or the want to live in a secret volcano lair.

And yes, that second-to-last sentence did have a question within a question.

I can't say I'm disappointed that it went down. I'm not entirely comfortable with the precedent that building a successful kickstarter would set for the community.

Not to mention that the whole thing seemed to be flipping the bird to the developers and that's just.. well.. rude.

Fan translators are already seen as criminals by the game makers but at least right now they're criminals who do what they do because they love the developers product and want to make it available to more people. You start asking for money and instead you just look like a greedy jerk who is stealing their product and reselling it in a new market.

greedy jerk thats stealing others product??

there's nothing wrong for indie groupie that ask for funds to support their projects..but its wrong for translators to collect fees for fans translations??

this is so wrong...

personally..i dont mind paying for translations scripts..and its not piracy for me..

since..you still need the original files from the producer..

which means more sales for them too...

(provided they actually bought the files)

after all..arudoc didnt unleash their games pre-patch (on the note, please ignore Minna Daisuki because its not officially release under Seiha)

fan patches with translations are against games owners. whatever you say, if they dont give you permission, you cant do it. supportin new project is not against law.

omg... tell me how many people BUY games just to use transtations patch? this guy lives in a dream or what? maybe in your mind it is not piracy but in real world it is. if some fans gain money for transtations patches without permission then it is a piracy.

in short (because i am sure you still dont get it): fans use original files to make money without permission. still think it is not piracy?
