someguy withaname 10
This is a hypothetical that I was wondering about. Lets assume that the world is suddenly filled with people who are now willing to give VNs a chance instead of simply embracing some false stereotype. The catch is they will only look at one. If you had to show someone a single VN which one would it be? Just curiosity at work here and it does not necessarily have to be your personal favorite VN. Mine would be Katawa Shoujo. dilbert 10
In my case, it definitely wouldn't be my favorite one, since I know it's not an exemplar of the genre (Princess Waltz, ftr.) It would definitely be one of my favorites, though, and what I'd say depends on who I was showing it to. If I knew them, or knew anything about their tastes, that'd influence my recommendation. If I didn't know, I'd ask first. If they had any interest in fantasy, it'd probably be Fate/stay night. If they were more the spy genre type, I'd give them Grisaia. Deus Machina Demonbane, if they were into sci-fi, giant mech anime, or Lovecraft. People who preferred slice of life stuff, I'd probably also go with Katawa Shoujo. Harlequin 17
Filled with people, as in, many people suddenly appear that will try one VN? It's tough. I assume their tastes are mixed? Ah well no need to take it so seriously, lol. Well for example, if a massive amount of mystery lovers appeared and would with certainty try one VN, then I'd show them Umineko. No question about that. But as a -general- VN to show to a mix of all kinds of people... ummmmmm... very tough... mmmaybe the Muv-Luv series (let's just count it as one VN for this), since I gather it's pretty easy for a lot of people to enjoy it if they give it a chance. It's an impressive series. Or maybe Ever17, because it has many of the things usually found in VNs and of course a great story that is extremely fitting for this medium (you know what I'm talking about if you've read it). desi 53
I guess Clannad, because of the heavy theme of family and friends. Themes learned in the After Story will give a lot of people a different type of perspective in life perhaps.

Chocolatemilkgod 16
Problem with Clannad is it's really long and daunting for a first time reader (unfortunately, I know this from experience). The Muv Luv series not only has the issue of being long, but has the first two parts which are pretty naff... Ever17 might work, though, if the person isn't too contra to the slice of life parts. Same with Katawa Shoujo. Depends on the person and what affinities they have. Personally, I'd be tempted to recommend something like Saya no Uta. Short as to not be daunting, but certainly having impact. If that went well, I'd probably increase the length a bit with something like Katawa Shoujo, and then move on from there to a longer VN to seal the deal. By the same token, Saya no Uta would probably be a bit too much for the first time reader as well. Guessing a number of people would be turned off by some of the things in there. I first interpreted this as a "one and only one VN", so looking back KS is probably the better choice.

Really depends on the person, I guess. If I knew they could handle things like saya then that's a great choice. If not, then KS or Ever17 are pretty good choices, too (although KS probably more so, IMO, even though I liked Ever17 more, but whatever). I haven't played Planetarian before, but could that work? I man it's short, which is good, I just don't know if it would have the 'oomph' to really get across what VNs are or not (it could also be too short... again, a lot of this is dependent on the person and their likes/dislikes/patience etc.). Maoh 13
I guess i'd choose something with gameplay to get them hooked while they read the story, something like Utawarerumono or Rance 7 or Pretty Soldier Wars... jk But if the person is a purist (or just a girl) and i had to chose a non-ero nv, i'd side with chocogami with Ever17, it might be a little heavy at the start but it really gets you hooked up with it
Yachi 13
Utawarerumono or KS. nah wtf am I saying, Utawarerumono.

ultimecea 22
depends on what type of genre.. but generally..it'll be either Clannad or MuvLuv trilogy~
SaruDa 11
Tsukihime or Ever17.
killerinsidee 14
I would also say Ever17. As someone said before, people (possibly ignorant) would just drop long VNs such as Clannad because it has so much side routes and stuff that you need to clear to play the After Story. Ever17 kind of keeps you hooked, for several reasons. Edited December 19, 2013 by killerinsidee
Pasa 278
For first time readers i wold say something with gameplay like Utawarerumono or Yumina the Ethereal.
Gerard the Lone Wolf 10
The dominant type of VN is Japanese 18+ eroge, so if they can deal with cartoon porn, they pretty much could accept the genre as a whole. I would probably suggest something that has some mild sexual content or fan-services with a simple decent story suitable for light reading, but has a significant impact on its conclusion and can generate a feeling that it would be pretty awesome if it were to be turned into an anime. Yea, something like G-Senjou no Maou. I could give them Clannad, Rewrite, or Ever17, or even gameplay handheld VN such as 999 and Danganronpa, but that would not break a false stereotype. It would only be like erm.. "acceptable" titles surrounded by a pile of cartoon porn shit. They probably will open up to all-ages, but I think they will still shun 18+ titles. If I have only one shot at this, the best thing is to pick a 18+ title. Anyone who can't accept it by then simply isn't cut out for this medium. OneManArmy 82
Lets assume that the world is suddenly filled with people who are now willing to give VNs a chance instead of simply embracing some false stereotype. The catch is they will only look at one. If you had to show someone a single VN which one would it be? That's a hard question but I would recommend that someone Swan Song. It's a game which makes the reader think about the human society and mankind in general. I'm aware that a lot of people would feel disgusted by the rape and death scenes but those people aren't open minded enough for the world of visual novels anyway.
