Having read it, I agree with you. Lucia's route was great, the rest of the game was fairly mediocre.

It's a pretty fun game. Not the best I've played, but still good. (But no Makoto route )

Tears to Tiara isn't quite bad, but it's not good either. I've played a bit of it, but didn't get very far before dropping it. The battle system is a bit lacklustre, many comments on VNDB say that they just used the auto feature. The story is meh. Original-ish, but poorly executed for the most part. Characters are mixed. Personally I detested Arawn (one of the reasons I dropped it so quickly), yet liked Arthur (who I'd much rather have as the protagonist) Character interactions/chemistry also leave things to be desired. I couldn't really find any good points, and so had no reason to justify continuing to play it. I may do so eventually, but I'm not limited to only English VNs. It's not excessively bad (not to the point of Harem Party with sound - Sophie's voice causes a 5.x10^29 % increase in suicide rates among VN players), and some people did like it so I'd say give it a try, but low priority. The others are likely much more enjoyable. As for Saya no Uta, I and many other respected members of the community (hah, as-if!) find it to be an extremely good VN. Loli, good story, loli, good characters, loli, etc. Some would consider it to be a masterpiece. It is a bit dark, but not dark for the sake of it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone, as long as they don't faint at the sight of virtual blood.

The differences between playing with MT and with jap knowledge: MT: Far less effort involved in setting up. A few hours compared to years, or at least months with assistance to get to a level sufficient for reading. Built-in dictionary. You don't have to go looking up kanji that you don't understand. Sometimes almost flawless translations Jap: Far greater understanding of written jap. Understanding of jokes, made-up words, etc Can understand any text. Machine Translators have to hook text from the game, which is sometimes impossible or difficult, and can't translate jap on pictures Sometimes MT mangles text, even if words and phrases are properly translated More differences: I can play Light VNs, Nitro+ and Liar-soft games (all text-heavy) with Machine Translation, and understand a large amount. Killer is playing much lighter VNs, which are far less story based. Eventually, killer will surpass me and be able to play raiL-soft games (extremely high-level story, sophisticated writing and walls-of-text) with ease, and a greater understanding of the game. But that may be years in the future. I can play most games with MT at the same speed as I would play an already translated game. I do have a higher reading ability than most, even among VNs, but when you get used to it, it's fairly quick. With the plethora of kanji, sometimes jap-readers have to look up words. It takes years and a lot of work to become knowledgeable enough to read, say, a raiL-soft game without assistance MT is convenience, and requires far less effort. Jap knowledge is far greater understanding. Investing in MT would lead to a lot more translations. Now, there's one issue that always springs up there: Quality. Many of us have read MT'd works, such as... Flyable Heart. The translation is shit, for the most part. However, the first few minutes of the game had been edited, QC'd, etc. The rest hadn't even been proofread. You can barely tell that the first few minutes are Machine Translated. Editing a Machine Translation is fairly quick, and requires less jap knowledge. Machine Translation homecoming standard will take out the most time-consuming part of Translation - the translation. You then just need to edit and QC it, which anyone with good eng knowledge and slight jap knowledge can do. This would mean a LOT more translations. Jap-knowledge translations... vary. Some are epic, to a level that a Machine Translation would never be able to compete (see - TakaJun on Majikoi). Others aren't so good (see - Ixrec). Some translators only have a very basic knowledge of English - even when it's their home language. Seriously, I've read fanfictions better than some of the translations (see - early MangaGamer works). Some of these translations would actually benefit from being MT'd and edited.

3. Deardrops 2. FSN 4. Princcess Waltz 1. Saya no Uta Get rid of Tears to Tiara if you have and want to keep any semblance of sanity. (Not that it's a crazy VN, it's just crap) Also either get rid of Harem Party, play it soundless, or be a masochist.

You're out by 5 though. ie, at start of yours it would be 808, and end at 996. Where you made the mistake may have been the first shipgirls post - the special production bonus of 5 was on all posts after that, but not including the one they were introduced on. .................[insert ultimumknight here].......................... Avenger and the Church of Loli and Imoutou offer a service to transform any non-unique denizen into a loli imoutou. Additionally, Avenger has recruited top scientific personnel for research on a top-secret project. Their research knowledge is protected by powerful loli imoutou magicians. As such, it can not be learned by anyone uninvolved in the research project, even by overhearing a conversation. [special] 10 random citizens (of any type) transform into loli imoutous every post. No direct affect on population. Top Secret research started. ----------------------------------------------------------- Special: +10 Shipgirls (more like shitgirls) Population: 1006 Current Inventory *Mysterious summoning staff- Has the mysterious power to summon friendly monsters. *ASO DNA - DNA samples collected from Aggressive Sea Organism.

It rained today.

True, but one of the main reasons why it's helpful to have voices is with dialect. Normal text is usually standardised, and much easier for the translators to translate.

Edited & condensed machine translations are extremely better than raw machine translation. EX, while playing a jap game, I have 4 different translators and 2 dictionaries - to understand what is going on I can take the parts from each translator which best fit the context of the VN. It's quite common for 2 or 3 to have the correct translation and the other(s) to be off, and rarely only 1 is correct. Lines which no translator can make sense of I can break up in the dictionary and work it out. I manage to get a very high understanding ratio, where a single translator may be far less. With my method, all you really need is an editor who's watched a lot of anime/read a lot of VNs to understand spoken as well as being quite good at English to piece things together. No need to learn jap. That said, there are times when jap knowledge is essential. And this all takes human time (though far less than learning jap takes), rather than 100% machine.

My comment was more directed at the stigma that machine translations are low quality. Machine translations by themselves are in many cases, but with proper editing they're very good. I read a lot of untranslated visual novels with several translators, and don't think I lose very much, if anything (depending on VN, some writing styles are more suited for machine translators). I expect the translation will be, at worst, mediocre. Machine translation quality is just a stereotype. (and at least it's not as bad as ixrec or moogy)

... You mean a bad machine translation.
