New VN localization company: MoeNovel

I don't think they've turned anything upside down... yet. They've had a lot of poo thrown at them by people on the internet, but that's a tediously common occurance these days and isn't, by itself, a noteworthy achievement :D

I support what Moenovel is trying to do, because the industry is in decline and opening up new markets won't hurt it

Moecrap ain't doing jackshit to improve the industry's decline, they are bunch of retarded morons who have no idea what a marketing field study is...

12yo french girls my ass, they don't know crap about the VN's main audience.

P.S. get outta here, you moenovel paid enthusiast. ¬¬

I hadn't realised it had already been uploaded  It makes sense now, but I'm a little out of it atm, it's taking me some time to readjust ;) I might download it just to laugh at the translation.

Anyone else think this move reeks of desperation brought on by the state of the industry in Japan? Moenovel is a sister company of Pulltop, right (please tell me I have this piece of information correct XD)It feels like this wasn't just a push into western markets, this was a pretty damn aggressive move which came almost out of the blue to try and open itself up to as many new potential buyers as possible. Anyone know how Pulltop's sales doing in Japan?

Seriously? Did you even look into the vn/eroge industry in Japan? That shit your saying came out of the blue just like this shit called Moenovel did.

Imo eroge has gotten a ton more of attention than it did back in the 90's and early 2000's.

Can you guys just cool down your head, please. There's no need to insult him, you know?

I support what Moenovel is trying to do,

So here is my question, what exactly do you think you're supporting? Some smart move to save the rotten industry? A noble intention to spread the great and joyful VN medium to 12 year old French girls through extreme censorship and butchering? A great alteration that somehow became a masterpiece through the genius mind of the people who works on Demon Soul?

Why not bring the porn industry (not saying eroge = porn) to 12 year old French girls through extreme censorship?

Does anyone here think that makes any sense? No.

Same thing with censoring and butchering eroge to the point where they have to change the actual game. Of course eroge is not porn, nor is the eroge industry affiliated with the pornography industry.

I was just trying to use an analogy the masses affiliate eroge with.

Eroge wasn't meant for little 12y/o kids. It shouldn't be brought to them is my point.

Alcohol isn't meant for kids. It shouldn't be watered down and moenovel-ized for kids.

Sorry had to throw in another anology.

You sound like a kid

Don’t like the game? Don’t buy it. Want to read it but don’t like the translation? Then learn Japanese like people used to. Want to have a cry? Then get a blog or log on to twitter. I have no patience for spoilt brats, who think they’re owed the fucking world, chucking tantrums because everything they wanted wasn’t delivered to them on a silver platter. Does Moenovel’s localisation piss you off? Tough shit, that’s life. Take the silver spoon out of your arse, neck up, and stop whining like a fucking girl. You want to rip into me because evil Moenovel killed your dog and you think I’m one of their very wicked employees? Then PM me and we’ll have it out in private. Knock yourself out. Same deal for Helvetica Standard. Oh, and machine translation? Fuck off.

Honestly, 1st world problems.

Whenever we see sale figures for Visual Novels, they’re always low compared to where they were a decade ago. If you take the producer of Minori at his word:

Sales are decreasing every year, and the market itself is shrinking. There’s around 200 companies, big and small, producing bishoujo games today, but this number is also shrinking. You spoke of the advent of personal computing. In 2000, during the industry’s best times, a game that sold 100,000 copies was considered a blockbuster. 30,000 copies sold meant a big hit, and games that sold 20,000 copies was a success. Now, if you can sell 10,000 copies, you’ve got a hit on your hands. That’s the state of the industry. 10,000 copies is about .01% of the adult population of Japan. Most games go unplayed and unheard of. I’m not sure how these numbers compare to viewership trends for anime in the same time period.

The article the interview is on then goes on to say

The history of bishoujo games can be traced back to the late 90s, when computers became popular in private homes. The market grew steadily during the first half of the 2000s, with yearly sales reaching almost 30 billion yen ($321M). However, since the apogee of bishoujo games in the early 2000s, the market has shrunk continually. Even though there are more than 600 titles released every year, the market was worth only 22 billion yen ($200M) last year.

Annual Salary under 3M Yen?! The Truth Behind the Unstoppable Decay of the Bishoujo Game Industry |

But I don't know how accurate these figures are or whether this decline was just because of the disaster that occured a couple of years ago... which apparently hit the industry hard. My impression is that the industry is suffering. If I'm wrong feel free to correct me or call me an idiot. Whatever floats your boat.

Can you guys just cool down your head, please. There's no need to insult him, you know?

Let them vent, don't worry about it. I've wasted a decade of my life hanging out on rpgcodex, a place which decays your soul but makes you immune to foul language and namecalling..... welllll, mostly anyway.

So here is my question, what exactly do you think you're supporting?

I'm more interested in the medium itself than the game and I’ll support any attempt to bring visual novels to a wider audience. Do I care that the game was censored? No. Why? Because if they succeed in their ambitions, then many more VNs will be created, and if they don’t than a fan-translator will most likely fix it later on.

I'm passionate about the Visual novel medium, I think it's a wonderful way to tell stories. Any attempt to grow it is something I can appreciate. I also feel the same way about interactive fiction as a whole. Was it a stupid attempt by Moenovel? Don't know, don't care, let them try it if they want to. It's their game (well, their sister company's game).

Eroge wasn't meant for little 12y/o kids. It shouldn't be brought to them is my point.

Eliminate the h-scenes from an eroge game and you don't have an eroge game anymore. Simple. Whether it's still a quality game without the h-scenes is another point altogether.

Dude its not even about them eliminating the H scenes , that means nothing. It when they edited out the jokes and even edited kissing scenes that there's a problem. They are bringing morality values from Japan (kissing is seen as shameful for its majority especially when its in public) into a western audience where that isnt stigmatized as much as it is there , and re-translating (lulz) the original story to accomodate their own decency standards. that is just WRONG.

So you don't care about the implication as long as the result is desirable. Okay.

Not sure how butchering and censoring a sexfriend route to make it suitable for children can grow the medium though. Bad translation quality is a direct result of heavy censoring too.

But in the end we all have different opinion about the matter, so, whatever.

pffft..you just cut and paste words from Aaeru >.>

you need to look at 3 main point here :

1)its not due to censorship that people were bashing this crappy company...but its because they altered the scripts which fueled the RAGE

2)they could get any other all ages games if they want to support and promote VNs to wider range

3)you just follow Aaeru's opinion " quantity > quality"

and thats really an insult to all other fan translator that tries their best to help and promote VNs that they enjoyed

its not a stupid attempt...

but..its more to like INSULTING VN's community over the act of destroying and soiling a perfect artwork and scripts with outrageous alterations...

lolz....if its just someting simple as only H-scenes..

they removed all those SEX JOKES and BATH TUB scenes which actually plays a big role in the character's building

plus..censoring kissing scenes and altering them bloody scripts were just fully condemning the quality of the VN itself >.>

only cowards bash people in PMs

It's courtesy. If you're going to have a spat with someone, you do it in private so you don't poison the atmosphere for others.

pffft..you just cut and paste words from Aaeru >.>

No words were cut and pasted from other sources on the internet unless I directly quoted them.

but its because they altered the scripts which fueled the RAGE

Moenovel and Pulltop are owned by the same parent company, so they're pretty much altering their own work. Which they have every right to, because it's their own work. And even if it wasn't, all changes would have been agreed to/directed by the creators. You don't have any right to rage at how they choose to distribute or publish their work.

I remember the days when people used to vote with their wallet :( .

2)they could get any other all ages games if they want to support and promote VNs to wider range

They didn't want to, they wanted this one. They liked this VN. It was their pet, they gave it a cute nickname, they go to sleep with the VN beside them, the VN comforts them when they feel down and never forgets their birthday. Again, it's their call.

3)you just follow Aaeru's opinion " quantity > quality"

I'm my own man, my opinions are my arse's, they don't come from anybody else.

but..its more to like INSULTING VN's community over the act of destroying and soiling a perfect artwork and scripts with outrageous alterations...

Once again, it's their artwork to destroy.

In all seriousness, trying to bring VNs over from Japan and market them effectively to a western audience is great. I would love to see more visual novels over here, and, potentially, have more 'western' visual novels like Katawa Shoujo be inspired from those from Japan. However, a shoddy translation/editing coupled with removal of some of the story is the wrong way to go about it. The whole buying likes on facebook fiasco is insincere, too, and not what I want from a company trying to act like a knight in shining armour, as it were.

Rather surprisingly, after all of that 'Moenovel bashing', I still want them to do well. But only if they avoid screwing around with the stories they translate. I can live with H scene removal as I usually skip past them anyway (if I really wanted to, I could get the Japanese version; I know enough Japanese to understand sex scenes...), but I don't want anything else censored (try to choose a game that doesn't have a whole bunch of sex jokes and an entire sex friend route, perhaps). I also want good translation quality. Is that so much to ask?

If they get their act together and fix their translations (either for hearts had wings or future titles) and avoid messing with the actual story, then I'm more than willing to support them.

Welcome Rooke, and just some warning for future. Dont try to talk sense into Ultimecea, it wont work, many people tried everyone failed. He has illness called "You dont agree to what i say so you are an idiot, douche and all that is wrong and evil". I hope you will enjoy your stay. Also dont try to be too serious here on this forum, it hurts our heads too much.

ouu the flame war start again? Better get my popcorn

now with that out of the way let be serious

I plays VN for a long time from when I have no possible way of supporting them by purchese anything

(you dont want to ask your parents to buy an eroge via their credit card wont you)

but now I can and at first when I saw a new company And there first game, I truely wanted to support them

Im joyfully read the description and BAMMM all the 18+ related contents has been remove!

Im sorry but censoring or alternating from the original is the deal breaker for me

if the original is an all age title that would be fine

well you have your oppinion Rooke and I can see what Moenovel is trying to achieve

but unfortunately most of the people around here dont see that alternating the game is what we wanted nor does it will benefit the VN society as a whole

Dat's racist ..

I was just pointing the sheer absurd of that statement (you know, intended for 12yo french girls or UK girls or "whatsitsname country" girls)

meaning Moenovel doesn't know or pretends not to know what kind of audience these games are aimed at (clearly not for female teenagers)

And no, I'm not racist. I'd so much love to have a french girlfriend, who wouldn't? :3

I think he meant if there are no sex scenes then girls would be more attracted to it, though there are plenty of otome games with sex scenes so yeah.
